Maternity Session Details & Tips

For an hour or two before your photo shoot, please do not wear any tight fitting clothes, or clothes with elastic, especially around your belly.  This can leave marks or indentations on your skin that takes hours to go away. Such items as bras, pants with elastic waistbands and even socks can leave marks on your skin that will show up on your pictures.

Apply a light moisturizing lotion on your belly right before your photo shoot, and on any other dry skin that you might have.

Please have your hands and feet manicured, as they will show in many of your portraits.  A french manicure or clear nail polish photographs MUCH better than colored polish, especially in black and white portraits.

You can wear your makeup as you normally would, while using only makeup with matte finishes.  You may want to add a little bit more mascara than you usually wear, to enhance the eyes in your portraits.

If you can still wear your wedding ring, please bring it, and make sure it is clean and sparkly. You may also bring any jewelry that is special to you.  You’ll want to keep your jewelry subtle, so that it doesn’t detract from the focus on the belly.

Bring along any special toy or gift that you have for the new baby that you would like included in your portraits.

Your session should take place between weeks 31 and 36 if possible. Your belly may be too small before then and if you leave it any later we could run the risk of missing out.

Bring along any special toy or gift that you have for the new baby that you would like included in your portraits. And if you have something of importance that you would like to include in your portraits please bring it along. A family heirloom, a beautiful gift from a friend or an adorable pair of shoes that you couldn’t help purchasing.

What to Wear

Some things to consider before your session: Will you be clothed during the session? Will you prefer to be semi nude or nude? Do you love the intimate style of skin touching skin with your partner? Do you like the idea of using beautiful fabrics to accentuate your form and hide any areas of your body that you would rather not be in the portraits?

What should you wear? Many women choose to go natural or topless. You will be in a private studio with a professional photographer who is considering lighting, composition and delivering some beautiful artwork. We have some beautiful fabrics that look very classical and help you to feel comfortable. If nude or semi nude is not your cup of tea then perhaps a fitted top that accentuates your form. If you despise your pregnancy jeans bring your regular jeans and unzip them. This looks great with a tank top or bikini top.

If someone else will be joining you in the session we advise to select clothing and accessories that do not distract from the main subject: your belly. Wear darker clothing, avoid clothing with writing or patterns, remove watches and remove shoes and socks.

Mid-tone colors work best -- avoid busy patterns which can be distracting.

If you would like to incorporate a little flare then I recommend accent accessories. For example a scarf or necklace that is a bright color or flower in your hair. I’m a fan of rich color but you want to be delicate about incorporating it.
